Legal AI for law firms in the UAE
By Antonin Ribeaud · Published
Your lawyers already know which questions eat their afternoons: finding the article that governs a point and quoting it right. I build the legal AI assistant that does that search with them. It answers from the law and from your firm’s documents, and it backs every point with a citation they can click and check.
It runs in production for a regulated client. 0 fabricated citations reach the user.
The citation is the product
The risk is a fluent wrong answer. A lawyer who reads “Article 12 of Decree No. 4 of 2022” acts on it, and if that article does not exist or the number is off by one, the mistake ends up in advice a client relies on. A wrong answer looks exactly like a right one, so once people catch one, they re-check everything by hand and the tool stops saving time.
So the assistant follows one rule: the model reasons about the question, but it never states on its own what the law says. It retrieves, then code verifies.
What your team gets
- One answer per question, with a footnote per point that opens the source text of the article.
- A plain “I can’t confirm this” when the corpus does not cover the point, instead of a confident paragraph about a law that governs somewhere else.
- Research time on a cited point down about 60% for the client’s team, because the exact article is one click away.
- Jurisdictions kept apart. Federal law, each emirate’s laws, and the DIFC and ADGM regimes are separate systems; when the search has to go wider, the answer says so.
How a project runs
- In writing first: which practice areas, which documents, who may see what, and where a wrong answer would hurt most.
- A pilot on one practice area, measured on your own questions, with your lawyers reading every footnote.
- Production in your own cloud account, with access rules applied inside the search and a versioned corpus, so an answer can be reproduced after the law changes.
What it will not do
It does not replace a lawyer’s judgment, and it does not fix missing source data. If a law is absent or out of date in the corpus, the assistant names the gap rather than inventing the text. When an article number will not verify, it keeps the law and drops the number, so you sometimes get a coarser answer than a sharp associate would give. That is the trade I chose.
The technical deep-dive is in the case study below.
Questions I get about this
Can law firms in the UAE use AI for legal research?
Yes, if every answer can be checked. The assistant cites the exact article behind each point, and when it cannot verify a reference it says so instead of guessing. The documents stay under your control: the system runs in your own cloud account, not on a shared public tool.
How do you stop the AI from inventing a citation?
The model never writes the citation. It asks to cite, and plain code checks that request against the laws it just retrieved and against the article text on file. A reference that does not verify is removed before anyone sees the answer.
Can it work on our own precedents, memos and contracts?
Yes. Your documents go into the same verified corpus as the law, with access rules applied inside the search, so a lawyer only gets answers from files they are allowed to open.
Got this problem? I'll look at yours, in writing.
